How MUCH engine oil?

Hey guys, I just did my 10000km service. I provided my own oil. It was a 5L bottle and came back with 2L left in it. Is this ok? I thought I read somewhere that the engine should hold 4.3L or something? is 3L the correct amount?
-----
Just an update, coincidentally, while I was writing the last post I got a call from the Mazda dealer I had it serviced telling me that a survey will be delivered and they appreciate my feedback.

So I asked about the engine oil and if a wheel rotation was done since it was not mentioned in the receipt but is a requirement in the manual.

The lady got back to me and confirmed that the engine should have 4.3L of oil in it and my tires were rotated according to the system.

She also told me that one of the service chief (for lack of a better word) was concerned about my engine oil level and asked me to drop by. Since it was close to my house I did and he confirmed the oil level was below the MIN line. The service chief then apologized, filled up the oil and I went on my way.

The service technician made a mistake on the most fundamental service that is very, very common in the workshop. It makes you think doesn't it?

Were my tires really rotated? Was my oil filter fitted on properly? etc.

Some info:

1. The reason I have my car serviced at Mazda is because I don't want them to have an excuse if my car fails under warranty.

2. The place I got my car serviced was Max Kirwan Mazda in Melbourne.

3. The service cost $196 excluding engine oil (which I bought from the $30 Supercheap deal)

4. I asked and was told at service that the engine oil they provide is Shell 10W-30.

sounds like they just drained the oil from the sump and didnt replace the filter, which is very lazy and dodgy.

Hi, is there a way I can check if they have replaced the filter or not? I am not very knowledgable mechanically but I have heard that it's quite difficult to change the engine oil by yourself on mazda 3s.

Is there a way to check without taking the filter out?

That sucks. Mazda charge an arm and a leg for servicing so you would
expect them to do a good job.

Once when I was having my 3 serviced I asked them to change the
headlight globes for me cos I have big hands and couldn't be bothered
doing it myself. Firstly, the mechanic who did it didn't know how to change
the low beam light so I had to walk him through it. And then he tried to tell
me that the high beam globe was the park light - rookie

changing the oil on a mazda 3 is simple. Honestly!

All you have to do is undo the sump plug and take the oil filter off. Then once its drained, do it back up, put a new filter on and fill her up.

The only real way you can tell if its a new filter is if it looks old and dirty. A new filter should be white and clean.

That's the thing 3sum if I take out the filter the oil would drain out, its new oil and I would need to buy another bottle of engine oil.

Also, it stated in on the invoice that a new filter was put on. Can they REALLY be that dodgy?

Sorry - it was Brighton.

That happened at the 1,000km free check up.
I had my 10,000 and 20,000 done with no probs though.

A word of advice - they are one of the most expensive dealers in Melb for servicing but they will usually price match the other dealers. So make sure you ring around for prices.

I dont see how else they could fill a car with 3L of oil.........Unless they just drained it from the filter and didnt undo the sump bolt.

If you read the manual, it tells you how much oil you need with or without a filter change.
