| | Guest | | | | | Who has sold their WRX for an MPS... Hi,
Ive had my 05 Rex for a few years now and im wanting a change...
Ive have had my eye on a brand new Arora Blue MPS3 and am about to test drive it but I wanted some thoughts on how you all think it stacks up to my WRX.
Obviously having 4WD in the REX means i can drop it at the lights (if i need too) and get an instant car length on most FWD and RWD cars but once im in gear im guessing the MPS3 is a little quicker and touquier having 380nms on hand.
My Rex always seems really fast in 1st n 2nd and but seemed to run out of puff over 100kmh and from what i hear the MPS is loving the high speed acceleration.
I am also a little concerned hearing the Tourque and boost is limited in 1st and 2nd - Is the car still quick in these gears?
And id like to hear you honest thoughts on the balance, handling, and grip levels of your MPS3.
I have always been a fan of mazda and have owned a 2000 MX5 which was so much fun and had amazing handling so I am seriously consdering the MPS3 and all your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

| | | | how hard can you drop the clutch in the subies? gearboxes durable to punishment?
i look after my gearbox in the Familia GTR with sympathetic off boost launches & not too long ago some older subie wrx was being a tool in traffic weaving in & out all over the place. somehow ended up next to it at the traffic lights. it got ahead when it went green & i didn't go past speed limit. had it been a rolling start in a higher speed zone who knows what the outcome would of been.
think i mighta intimidated him though cause he took the next left turn afterwards haha.
why not an MX-5 SE with a turbo upgrade kit? :)

| | | | I traded my MY03 WRX for a new 3 MPS in Dec 07. The two cars are very different and yes I do miss the AWD launch of the WRX, but the overall package of the MPS in much better.
Handling is on par with the WRX for everyday street use taking corners just as hard. I have not taken the MPS to the track yet, but would say the only advantage the WRX would have is traction coming out of the corner. Although if you get your launch technique right you will lose half a car at the launch but will catch the WRX by the end of second then just pull from there.
Straight line speed of WRX does not compare to MPS. MPS is far quicker and is line ball (actually pulled 1 car length) with an EVO 9 from 100 to 180kmh.
Supermazdkart; My WRX had 120,000kms and in this time completed numerous track days at Wakefield and at least 50 passes at WSID which included 5000 - 6000rpm clutch dumps at the lights and I never had box problems and was still running the stock clutch. |

Chuck an exhaust on a mps3 and you can have top end battles with evos and stis. Love it. |

| | | | I used to be a massive WRX fan, and I was recently looking at buying an MY06/MY07 WRX until I stumbled across the MPS (had never heard of one before). I drove both one weekend and was still undecided, then drove them both again the next weekend and it was clear as day, the WRX just didn't compared as an overall package, cheap interior, no extra perks. Where as the MPS has stylish interior, short shifter, leather trim, decent sound system and sits on 18" wheels as standard, the list goes on. Saving $300 on insurance was also a bonus.
Buy an MPS you wont be disappointed. |

That's not to say I didn't like the MPS, they are great cars and loved driving mine when I had it. I'm not trying to stir anything, i'm just giving my opinion because i've owned an MPS 3 and now drive an evo. |

| | | | I test drove a 06 WRX and then got the MPS.
I couldn't handle the cheapness of the interior and the coded ignition. I'd have to type that code in atleast twice every trip or atleast worry about it twice every trip.
It also comes down to looks. The WRX is always going to be known and make you a target of boy racers while the MPS is still rather unknown and you can take it easy or give it some if you choose.

I don't think I said you didn't, on the straight anyways . I was just saying what I have experienced in owning them both that is all. Is your MPS modified? |

| | | I test drove the WRX and was not a fan.
I can see why you'd love it (the WRX) for sure, but it was too small, and felt too cheap, but then you don't buy a WRX for that. I ended up debating between the mazda and the VW, my end choice is obvious, but the MPS3 is definitely a better package than the subie IMO and the added bonus is they don't come with the negative rep that all the spanners in WRX's have worked hard for (yet).
The only thing the WRX has over the MPS is the fact that it can put all it's power to good use, none of this needing to limit power in the first couple of gears rubbish. Something to think about if you are a speed junkie, and plan to mod a lot.

Then came back and drove the MY07 WRX. I was definately deciding between the 3 of them on that day. The cheapness of the interior of the WRX just let it down, just didnt compare to either of the mazdas and it really needs a 6th gear, the steering just feels dead compared to the MPS's. I had an Impreza RS at the time so the roughness of the subi gearbox or bad clutch didn't phase me. It just felt cheap and that lamo stereo with a cassette player ... ridiculous.
Straight after gettng back from the WRX test drive, I went and put the deposit down on the MPS6. |

| | | | I had been wanting a WRX wagon for years..........until i test drove one. Bland, boring interior, turbo lag, ridiculous insurance.
MPS seems (is) way more refined & impressive.

| | | | Both are great cars in their own ways - It just depends on what you want out of your drive. As an overall package the MPS is the better car for sure. But if its grip that you are after go with the Rex.
