I hope other members could share some price info on their recent purchases as I found it very hard (and somewhat intimidated) negotiating with the car dealers.
Is it worth waiting till next year to take advantage of the cheaper import duty then (10% to 5%) and also the usual discount over the new year period?

Just thought I'd chime in by saying Mazda have already passed on the import duty saving across its passenger car range. That happened last month. All the Recomended Delivered Prices on the website reflect this so you will not see any further adjustment on 1st Jan.
Of course there are always savings to be made in Jan/Feb on prior model year stock. Depends if you think the depreciation difference between a 09MY and 10MY vehicle is worth the saving. Not that easy to calculate I guess.
Hi MazdaGuru, thanks for the info (although I hope there's still some room for the price to move down with the Aussie $ going up and also the end of the federal govt 50% investment allowance on Dec 31).
Hi Mz21, which model is that? I am looking at getting the cheapest Neo Sedan automatic.

I've been around the a dealership in mid Nov, and another colleague of mine went to another. It seems, the absolute best price you can do for a 3 (any spec) is the RRP as the drive away price, but that depends on how good your negotiation skills are and whether the dealership/salesperson will humour you.
As the 3s are moving through the door, most of them will not budge on price (trust me I tried). That is, they rather not sell you the car and wait for the next buyer to pay more.
General rule of thumb (for a maxx auto) is 26K RRP + 3K (Dealer, gov't, rego, etc) - 2K discount, giving you about 27K drive away. Then you add a bit of options and next thing you know it's over 30K. (Like the max for the extra airbags and alloys and cruise control)
As a buying strategy, you can try giving each dealership a call and ask them the best price they can do for the Neo (& colour). However, i suspect all of them will give you an indicative price (rather than a real quote) and ask you to come in person to negotiate.
Another alternative is trying to get a demo car.
You may have a better chance at getting the price you want in Dec as the dealers are pushing to sell everything they have in stock, but you may not get the colour you want and delivery may actually be in Jan 10.
Not sure if that is possible Mazdabrain, especially not for the mazda 3, the CX7s and the CX9s. Mazdas have been selling so much more than they have capacity to produce. We enquired for both the CX7s and the CX9s recently, and both had a 3 month waiting period. No other dealers we visited had any in stock. We are now considering the Mazda 3 for the missus, and may end up having to wait as well. The dealers werent gonna budge for that very reason, there is no stock at the moment, and the Mazda vehicles are selling like hotcakes. There is a backlog of orders has added to the non-incentive for heavy discounting like the Toyotas
I've purchased the Mazda 3 Neo Auto Sedan for $23,649 drive away.
The price includes tinted windows.
I spoke to a few dealers – all could offer the car for around $24k.
Bought it from the one who went the extra mile :-).
Hope it provides a data point for those interested in getting the car to take advantage of the end of year discount (I suspect the special will most likely will be extended to Jan 2010).
