Mazda 3 - Fuel trip activation

Enabling Trip Computer (only works on B-series (05-06) Mazda3 Maxx and above)
Note: this mod ONLY WORKS on
B-Series(05-06) Mazda3s of only Maxx spec. and above

    Sorry Neo owners!
This also works for those with Luxury Packs (Bose sytems).
It appears limited to head units (HU) supplied by Clarion, which were only in this period of Mazda3 production.
So if yours isn't a Clarion you won't be successful.
Before others ask or try it out, it will not work on A-Series(04-05) models of any kind, as they do not have the physical wiring loom in place. Sorry guys!
It will not work on C-Series (06-07) models of any kind, as they have different HUs and we can't unlock them (yet...!)

    What it does:
Enables the fuel trip meter (very left hand side of the LCD panel, where the clock is usually displayed):

This was never an offering from Mazda in any Australian Mazda3, for reasons stated above.
However, these specific HUs in the B-series have the system built in. It's dormant and only needs activating.
It displays 4 selectable fuel usage readouts, changeable using the 'SET' key:
    1) Instantaneous fuel consumption in L/100km
    2) Average fuel consumption in L/100km
    3) Estimated distance to empty
    4) Average speed in km/h

    How do I do it?

    Method 1:
    1) Get in, close door.
    2) Insert key - DON'T TURN.
    3) Hold down the 'FM1/2' or 'AM/FM' button together with the CD button. Keep them held down.
    4) Turn key to ACC. Display reads 'Hello' immediately followed by 'DIS ON' (Driver Information System - On).
You might also find success turning the engine on at this stage.
    5) Press the 'SET' key for at least 5 seconds. You should hear a beep.
    6) Turn engine off, then back to ACC (or turn engine back on)
    7) Press 'SET' again to cycle through the functions. Press 'CLOCK' to return to the clock. Press 'SET' again for the fuel trip computer.
To reset the meter, just hold down the 'SET' button on whichever mode you want reset.

    Method 2:
    1) Before starting the engine, keep the 'CD' and 'FM1/2' buttons pressed.
    2) Start the engine.
    3) After 5 seconds, you should see 'DIS ON'
    4) Stop the engine.
    5) Start the engine again.
    6) Now, you should have your fuel computer activated.
    7) Press 'SET' again to cycle through the functions. Press 'CLOCK' to return to the clock. Press 'SET' again for the fuel trip computer.
To reset the meter, just hold down the 'SET' button on whichever mode you want reset.
(This has been working in the US, has worked for some here).

Method 3: (Thanks ZOOM'N23) - Official Mazda Instructions, apparently!
    1) To turn the trip computer on...
    2) Start the car
    3) Turn on the stereo - while the stereo is on, press the 'FM1/2' button at the same time as the 'CD' button for about 5 seconds.
    4) You should then get a message saying 'DIS ON'
    5) At that point, turn off the car and turn it back on to see if the trip computer has actually been activated.

Method 4: if all else fails...
A few of the guys in the US have had some luck with pressing the 'SET' button on the stereo and the 'VOLUME +' button on the steering wheel with the ignition in the 'ON' position.
(It was found that pressing the 'AM' button and 'MEDIA' buttons with the ignition on it displays 'DIS OFF', but this did not swich the trip meter off).
No guarantees this'll work at all...

Please be patient. Sometimes it takes a few goes to get it to work.
But on some, it doesn't work at all. Seems to be dependant on the Head Unit you have.
And this is why Mazda doesn't offer it as an official option.
Hope one of these solutions works for you. I will update methods and info as more comes to hand.
    Good luck!

Other HU options: (Thanks to SilverSP & Jason):
LCD Test: PWR + Seek Up
    Button Test: PWR + Clock
Speaker Test: PWR + Text (Right Knob)
    Firmware: Audio Cont + 1
    Antenna On: PWR + AM
    Radio Signal: PWR + 2
Screen contrast: Audio Cont (Left Knob) + Tune-audio-M disp button (Right knob).
Hold them until it beeps and the screen will show contrast 9.
Turn the Audio Cont (Left knob) to adjust the screen contrast up (to a max of 15) or down (to a minimum of 1).

No Idea what the following does:
    PWR + Seek Down
    PWR + 5
    PWR + 6

Many thanks to many OMCers for digging this one up!
MZ3_Pilot, DJIntegr8, KBlume, SilverSP, Jason and others.

How do you reset the 'remaining km's' distance-to-empty mode when you refill?

lol sure they get more features but at what price? Our cars are built in japan, there's are in thailand or something. We never get US remnants here.

Their engine is lower compression and tuned further to 'retard' so in the end our cars still push out that extra 12kw or so that they are missing out on. Not to mention ours are so much better built in every way possible.

For information a fair chunk, if not all, of the US market Mazda3s are made in Canada and have been for a while. Another bit of useless trivia is that Canada is one of the biggest markets for the 3 outside of Japan, even bigger than here.

It sounds as though you are disagreeing in some manner. Our cars are still made in japan, theirs are not. Canada, thailand, antarctica, if it aint japan then as far as I am concerned, it is nowhere near as good.

I am not disagreeing about where our market 3s come from. I was just helping out by defining the 'thailand or something' includes Canada as one of the major suppliers of 3s to the US.

On your screen above your headunit? I wish mine did. How does one (me in particular) find out what Gen/series the Car is? All I know is that mine is an 06 hatch luxury SP23 lol. Is it somewhere in my books?
