2012 Mazda CX-5 diesel fuel economy confirmed: 5.7L/100km combined
    By Tim Beissmann | January 23rd, 2012

Mazda Australia has announced the official fuel consumption figures of the incoming Mazda CX-5, confirming the all-new compact SUV will be among the most fuel efficient vehicles in its class.

Mazda CX-5 models powered by the brand’s new SkyActiv-D 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine will use 5.7 litres of fuel per 100km on the combined cycle.

The only compact SUVs currently on sale in Australia that better the CX-5’s promised economy are the Mini Cooper D Countryman (4.4L/100km) and the Peugeot 3008 1.6 XSE HDi (5.1L/100km). With 129kW of power and 420Nm of torque on tap however, the CX-5 is significantly more powerful than the Mini (82kW/270Nm) and the Peugeot (80kW/240Nm).

    Mazda: New Cars 2012
    By Tim Beissmann | January 12th, 2012

Mazda continues its rollout of efficient SkyActiv technologies in 2012 with the local introduction of the compact CX-5 SUV in March. At this stage, it appears unlikely the light Mazda2 will adopt a SkyActiv engine in the New Year, while the mid-sized Mazda6 won’t get any significant upgrades until the all-new Takeri-derived model arrives in 2013. Benefitting from an update in September, the ever-popular Mazda3 will also continue through 2012 largely unchanged. Mazda Australia will have supply of the phased-out RX-8 for the first few months of the year, and is currently considering a special ‘farewell edition’ model to see its rotary sports car off in style.

Mazda6 four-door ‘coupe’ to rival Passat CC
    By Dan Strong | January 12th, 2012

The all-new Mazda6 range will include a flagship four-door ‘coupe’ variant designed to rival the Volkswagen Passat CC.

An insider to the all-new Mazda6 program said the new variant was originally designed as a traditional two-door coupe, but was redeveloped as a four-door model to expand its global appeal.

It will replace the current hatchback body style of the current Mazda6 after Mazda’s chief designer of the Takeri concept (main picture), Akira Tamatani, had revealed at November’s Tokyo motor show that the company had other design ideas to replace the ‘liftback’ hatch version.

The low-slung mid-sized hatchback will initially go on sale in the US and Japan in 2014 before expanding to Europe and potentially other markets like Australia further down the track.

The four-door ‘coupe’ will join the ...

Mazda3 dethrones Holden Commodore in 2011
    By Tim Beissmann | January 05th, 2012

The Mazda3 is officially Australia’s favourite car, ending the locally made Holden Commodore’s run of 15 years at the top.

The small Japanese car with the big grin fought a tit-for-tat battle with the big Aussie family favourite throughout the year, and eventually claimed the win by just 812 vehicles (41,429 vs 40,617).

The Mazda’s unprecedented 2011 performance, in which its sales increased by 6.2 per cent compared with 2010, sees it dislodge the Commodore from the number one spot for the first time since 1996, when the Commodore surged past traditional Australian rival, the Ford Falcon.

Official VFACTS data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) shows that 1,008,437 passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles were sold in Australia in 2011, down 2.6 per cent (27,137 vehicles) ...

    Mazda2 EV Review: ‘Zoom-zoom’ electrified
    By Jez Spinks | December 08th, 2011

Mazda is aiming to join the band of Japanese car brands offering vehicles with “electrification”.

It will first offer a hybrid in 2013, using Toyota’s well established ‘Hybrid Synergy Drive’ petrol-electric drivetrain found in the likes of the Prius.

But last week in Mazda’s home city of Hiroshima, Japan, CarAdvice was given a brief stint behind the wheel of a car that, while set to be leased in tiny numbers to government in 2012 in its current guise, is another few years into the future after that: a Mazda2-based battery electric vehicle.

There’s no futuristic styling here. Mazda’s development EV is pure 2011 Mazda2 city car – or Mazda Demio as it’s known in its domestic market.

Turn the ignition switch and of course there’s no familiar cough of an internal combustion engine firing into life. There’s just a beep ...

Mazda CX-5 GT Diesel pricing revealed
    By Jez Spinks | December 6th, 2011

The flagship model of the new 2012 Mazda CX-5 range will cost more than $50,000 driveaway, according to a new competition being run by the Japanese brand.

Mazda Australia is offering a Mazda CX-5 GT Diesel automatic as an online prize, and in the terms and conditions the company lists the vehicle’s value as $55,000 including all dealer and on-road costs.

The CX-5 is eventually expected to replace the relatively short-lived CX-7 as Mazda’s representative in the competitive compact SUV segment – as CarAdvice reported recently – though the two models will be sold side by side from March.

Mazda has yet to release pricing details for the CX-5, but admits the competition details provide a strong indicator of the cost for the range-topping model.

“No pricing has been officially signed off yet,” said Mazda Australia spokesman ...

Mazda BT-50, Ford FG MkII Falcon, Kia Optima, Rio get five-star ANCAP rating
    By Brett Davis | December 5th, 2011

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has just released its latest round of vehicle crash test results, with every vehicle tested awarded the maximum five-star rating.

The latest members of ANCAP’s five-star club include: the BMW 1 Series, Citroen C4, Citroen DS3, Ford Falcon FG MkII sedan and ute, Ford Kuga, Holden Captiva Series 2, Kia Optima, Kia Rio, Mazda BT-50, Mercedes Benz M-Class, Volkswagen Jetta, and the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet.

Interestingly, the Mazda BT-50, based on the same platform as the Ford Ranger, is rated the full five stars for versions that come with and without side airbags. Ford Ranger variants that are not specified with side airbags have been rated four stars in the previous round of testing.

The Kia Optima, equipped with EBD, six airbags, ...

Mazda CX-5 to kill off CX-7
    By Jez Spinks | December 1st, 2011

The 2012 Mazda CX-5 is set to become a full replacement for the Japanese brand’s CX-7 SUV in Australia when it goes on sale around March.

Mazda’s CX-7 has had only a relatively short lifespan, having launched in Australia in 2006, but the company’s incumbent Subaru Forester rival is all but officially confirmed to be usurped by the slightly smaller but better packaged and more technically advanced CX-5.

    (Mazda CX-7)

Mazda Australia spokesman Steve Maciver returned a question to CarAdvice when we tackled him on the company’s double-compact-SUV conundrum.

Mazda’s global boss, Takiri Yamanouchi, admitted to CarAdvice at the 2011 Tokyo motor show this week that the CX-5 and CX-7 would clash in some markets.

Australia is among only a handful of markets, though including North ...
